Primark Halloween Haul

Is anyone else going to a Halloween party this year?  I am, so I picked up some bits and pieces from Primark recently to use as part of my fancy dress costume. They had some great items including headbands and jewellery for the usual bargain Primark prices.  Here's what I bought:

This jewelled spider headband was only £2.50 so I had to have it.

I also bought a couple of pairs of earrings.  The witches on broomsticks were only £1 and the freaky pumpkin heads were £1.50.

Whilst I was in Primark I also picked up some non Halloween items.  The plimsolls were £2 for the blue and white stripy ones and £3 for the black lace ones.

I also bought another couple of pairs of earrings the blue/green round jewel earrings cost £1.50 and the clear stone front/back earrings were £2, these didn't stay in my ears at all because the butterfly backs didn't hold them onto my ears.   Luckily I have a box full of different sized butterfly backs so I used them instead to keep the earrings from falling out.

I love a good Primark haul don't you?

A Walk In The Woods Film Review

I went to see A Walk In The Woods last night at the cinema.  Normally the thought of two old guys hiking through the American wilderness would not be top of my list of films to watch at the cinema, but the film is based on the book of the same name by Bill Bryson which I read years ago and thoroughly enjoyed, so I thought I would give it a go.
A Walk In The Woods Film Review
I am really glad I did.  The film recounts Bills trip along the Appalachian trail in the eastern United States which is 2200 miles long.  It starts off with a jaded Bill doing the morning talk show circuit plugging a special edition set of his previous books based on his travels in various countries around the world (I would definitely recommend these books by the way, including Notes from a Small Island recounting his trip around Britain).  Bill (played by Robert Redford) is fed up with life and hasn’t written anything more than the foreword in a book for over 4 years.   After the death of an acquaintance he suddenly gets the idea to walk the Appalachian Trail, much to the consternation and disapproval of his English wife (she tells him that she doesn’t think he is too old, she knows he is too old).  She helpfully prints loads of articles from the internet detailing all the people who have died out on the trail and how to prevent bear attacks and finally concedes that he can only go if he has a companion for safety’s sake.

After making loads of phone calls to friends he hasn’t spoken to for years, he finally gets a call from Katz (Nick Nolte) who offers to come along for the ride.  It appears that Bill and Katz stopped being friends years ago after travelling around Europe and Katz still owes Bill $600 from that trip.  Desperate times call for desperate measures and Bill agrees to let Katz accompany him.

Turns out Katz is in worse shape than Bill and it's going to be hard going for two out of shape old guys, but walk the trail they do and the film recounts the many hilarious and dangerous encounters they have along the way.

It’s definitely worth a trip to the cinema and maybe it will encourage you to read one of Bill Bryson’s many entertaining books as well.

Let me know what you think of this film.

TIGI Bed Head After Party Smoothing Cream Review

I recently received some TIGI hair products to try out, one of which was the Bed Head After Party Smoothing Cream*.  I am always on the look out for great hair products especially those that tame my curly hair so I was interested to try this out.
TIGI Bed Head After Party Smoothing Cream Review
It says that it's a smoothing cream for silky, shiny, healthy looking hair, all of which are essential for my curly and somewhat frizzy hair.

The instructions for use are really simple, just smooth on dry hair and party on. I like something that is so easy to use, although I can't say I'm doing much partying on after using it but never mind.

Anyway, I tend to use this to tame the small frizzy little hairs that escape throughout the day when my hair is pulled back in a ponytail for work.   It also works well on the ends when I'm wearing my hair down.

You only need to use a small amount of the product to tame the frizz and my hair feels really silky after I've applied it and believe me that's not something I say very often.

This product is definitely something that has become part of my hair routine as there are not many products I've found that control my frizzy hair well.

TIGI Bed Head After Party Smoothing Cream is currently £10.15 for 100ml here.

Do you have any tried and tested products that you can recommend for curly hair?

Update on My Challenges for 2015

I set myself some challenges at the start of 2015 and just wanted to post a quick update on how I'm doing with them.
My Challenges for 2015
  1. Top of the list is to lose weight.  I set myself this target last year and whilst I did lose some weight, it wasn't anywhere near enough.  I did join a gym last year, so I am going in the right direction, but I am going to target myself with losing 2 stone this year and at least 1 dress size. Failing this at the moment as I'm still going to the gym but need to sort out my diet.
  2. I want to have 3 no spend months this year.  The no spends are on unnecessary items such as makeup, toiletries, clothes, shoes, accessories and jewellery.  It does not include food, drink, petrol or going out. COMPLETED.  I completed this challenge this week and promptly had a bit of a shopping spree, although it was more clothes than beauty.
  3. I want to use up 10 makeup items.  I find that makeup is the hardest thing to use up, so I will pick 10 items to fully use up and list them in a separate post. This is like the Project 10 Pan Challenge that appeared on You Tube a few years ago.  I have now used up 11 products which you can see in my empties posts throughout the year, so I have completed the challenge.  Considering how much makeup I actually own, this is not much of an achievement so I will have to set myself a harder target for 2016.
  4. Go for a proper bra fitting.  This may not seem like much of a challenge, but I have never had a bra fitting, so I think I really should this year and find out if I am wearing the correct size bra. COMPLETED.  You can read about my Bravissimo visit here.
  5. I want to improve the look of my teeth and I think I will start by trying to get them whiter.  I am going to try a few toothpastes and whitening strips to see if they make any difference and then if not I think I will look at having them professionally whitened.  So far I haven't seen any difference using whitening toothpastes, so I will look to buy some whitening strips when I visit LA.
  6. I have got to do something with my hair this year, as it just seems to be getting frizzier.  I am going to look into Brazilian Blow drys and other straightening treatments and see what looks like the best option. Not done anything about this one so far this year.
  7. I want to learn how to ski.  I have only been to an indoor ski slope once and I was not a natural talent by any means, but I see little kids swooping down the slope and I think if they can do it so can I, so I am going to give it another go this year.  I also want to have another go at Ice Skating as I walked past the Ice Rink outside the Natural History Museum in London last year and I really wanted to give it a go, but I didn't have the time. I went ice skating in Leeds 3 times this year. It was harder than I remember.  I kind of thought I would be gliding around the rink gracefully but in reality I was clinging onto the side trying not to fall down.  Hopefully I will get around to having at least 1 skiing lesson by the end of this year.
  8. Have false eyelashes put on professionally, because I have always wanted to try that out.  Not done anything about this one yet.
  9. Improve the condition of my nails as they are in really bad condition at the moment so they definitely need some TLC.  I have been using a couple of different nail products and they are in pretty good condition at the moment so I am making progress with this one. The product that has made the most noticeable difference to my nails is Nailtiques Formula 2.  My nails are longer and stronger than they have been in a long time.
  10. Find a hairdresser that I really like and go more regularly.  So far I have stuck to my usual hairdressers, so I really need to find a few to try out in Leeds.  If you have any recommendations for hairdressers in Leeds, please let me know.

So much left to do so little time  (how is it September already?).  I have made progress on a few of the challenges, but I have a lot to do before the end of the year if I want to complete the rest. Check back at the end of the year to see how I get on.

What are your challenges and goals for 2015?

Braun Face Epilator & Cleansing Brush Review

I recently received the Braun Face Epilator & Cleansing Brush* to try out and review. I have never used a facial epilator or a cleansing brush before, so I was really interested to see how I got on with them.
Braun Face Epilator & Cleansing Brush Review
First of all does the facial epilator hurt? I'm not going to lie, it does. Is it worth it? I think so. I think it's definitely a case of no pain no gain and this is the definition of that. If you suffer from dare I say a moustache or those nasty little dark chin hairs that pop up over night, then this is the perfect product for you.

Braun Face Epilator & Cleansing Brush Review

I wouldn't recommend this product if you are particularly hairy on your face as I think it would hurt too much, but then again maybe I'm just a wimp. In the end the pain is bearable and the results are worth it. I didn't get much redness when I used the product and the pain disappeared straight away.
Braun Face Epilator & Cleansing Brush Review

I love the fact that this is a multi tasking product and it also provides a cleansing brush attachment which is a nice little extra.  In all honesty, I don't think there is anything much to say about the cleansing brush, other than it works, its not too harsh on the skin and it's easy to interchange the epilator and the cleansing brush.  I probably wouldn't bother using the cleansing brush on it's own, but I may as well use it when I use the epilator.  I didn't even know a facial epilator was available on the market, but I have found it very useful and easy to use and it's £69.99 (it's on offer at Boots right now for £49.99).

Have you used a facial epilator before?

Curly Hair Products - John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Reviver Mousse

Earlier in the year I posted about my quest to find curly hair products that really work (you can read the post here).  I must admit I've struggled to find many that I would buy again, but John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Reviver Mousse does a good job.
John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Reviver Mousse
I do really like this product it's perfect for taming my curls without making them hard and crispy (those of you with curly hair will know what I mean).  I thought it did a really good job of holding my curls throughout the day and I didn't feel like I constantly had to check my hair to make sure it wasn't getting frizzy (the more you worry about it and touch your hair the more it gets frizzy, it's catch 22).

Here's a photo of my hair after using this product and the curls are much more defined than normal and there is definitely less frizz.
I will definitely buy this product again.  It costs £5.89 for 200ml at Boots and is currently included in their 3 for 2 offer.

Do you have any curly hair products to recommend, I'd love to hear about them?
