My Favourite Blogs

I love writing my blog, but I also really enjoy reading other blogs, so I thought I would tell you about 5 blogs that I am loving right now.  These are the blogs that I follow by email, so that I get all the posts sent directly to my inbox:

One of my favourite daily blogs is British Beauty Blogger.  If you are interested in all the new beauty products coming on the market then this is a great place to get regular updates.

Beauty Balm reviews lots of natural and organic products and subscribes to as many beauty boxes as I do.

DeliciouslyElla is a new favourite for me.  There are lots of easy to follow healthy recipes.  My favourite is the Raw Brownie recipe which is so easy and tastes amazing. It's hard to believe that it's healthy.

I love reading about all the hauls on Suzy Hearts Beauty.  I am so jealous of all the Sephora goodies that have appeared lately and it's given me a wishlist a mile long. Suzy also has a YouTube channel here

Buynowbloglater is a blog about shopping, but the twist is that the blogger Laura, is a Brit living in Dubai.

I read many more blogs, but these are the ones that I read nearly every post on, so check them out.  If you have a blog, then leave me a link, so that I can have a read.

Indeed Labs Snoxin, Nanoblur & Hydraluron

I recently purchased a box of travel sized Indeed Labs products that included 5ml samples of Snoxin, Nanoblur & Hydraluron.  I have to say they have been a welcome addition to my beauty routine.  I have combination skin and if I don't prep it properly, once I apply foundation I seem to have a few dry patches that are highlighted around my forehead and cheeks.  I have found using these Indeed Labs products has eliminated any dry patches and makes my foundation sit really well on my skin.
Indeed Labs Snoxin, Nanoblur & Hydraluron
After cleansing and toning I first use Hydraluron which is an Intense Hyaluronic Acid Moisture Boosting Serum.  This serum sinks into the skin almost immediately and aids in replenishing and retaining lost moisture.

I follow that with Snoxin a Concentrated Multi-Peptide Packed Serum and again this sinks into the skin really well and does not leave it feeling overloaded.

Then I use my normal moisturiser, followed by my YSL Le Teinte Touche Eclat Foundation. Finally, I pat some Nanoblur over my foundation which seems to help blur the pores on my nose and cheeks and just leaves a great finish on my skin.  Nanoblur is an Advanced Optical Diffusing Cream.

I have to admit that I am quite a lazy person, so the fact that I have added these 3 extra products to my routine means that they do really work for me and just leave my foundation looking and feeling really great.

I will definitely stock up on these products next time there is an offer.  I purchased them when there was a 1/3rd off plus an additional £5 off per product.  This little box set is normally £12.99, but with both offers I paid £3.66 which made it an absolute bargain (unfortunately, this offer was on a while ago, but if I see any other great offers I will let you know on my blog). Boots do have a 3 for 2 offer on at the moment which includes Indeed Labs products.

I think this little box set is a great way to try out some expensive products to see if they work for you.

Balance Me & Marie Claire Shopping Evening

I recently went to a Balance Me Shopping Evening which was organised by Marie Claire Magazine. Tickets cost £10 each and included a goodie bag and 15% discount on anything purchased on the day.
Balance Me Shopping EveningBalance Me Shopping Evening

The event was held in Debenhams in the White Rose Centre in Leeds and started at 6pm. It was held on the shop floor in a small space near the Balance Me stand. We were offered a glass of Champagne or fruit juice to start off with and some biscuits and then we were introduced to Sian Jones who is co-owner and director of Balance Me. Sian explained how the brand was started and the background of the 3 directors and then explained what was planned for the evening.
Balance Me Shopping Evening
Everyone had the opportunity to sit down with Sian and go through their skin concerns and she recommended which Balance Me products would be the most suitable to address our skin concerns.  There was no hard sell and Sian was really friendly & helpful throughout the chat.   I have a couple of areas of dark pigmentation on my cheeks and Sian recommended 3 products and showed me how to apply them to get the best results.  The products that she recommended for me were:
Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm which is a 100% natural product.
Radiance Face Mask which is 98% natural.
BB Natural Perfection with SPF 25 which is 99% natural.  This is their take on a BB cream.

We also had a skin-reading session with Jackie who also works for Balance Me.  I stuck my head into the skin-reading box which showed a reflection of my face and highlighted areas of concern which Jackie talked about and gave some tips on how to take care of my skin. In the end my skin was in much better shape than I imagined, especially with regards to sun damage. Jackie suggested exfoliating more and gave me a sample of the Radiance Face Oil (100% natural) and Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm. She was very flattering and guessed my age as in my twenties rather than the age that I actually am (which is a fair bit higher I have to admit). Thanks Jackie you made my day.
Balance Me Shopping Evening Samples
We had the chance to chat to Alex the Balance Me PR Manager. She was lovely to chat to and she introduced us to some of the new products which were not yet available in store. We were able to test the products and I will definitely be purchasing the Rose Otto Body Balm at some point in the future (unfortunately it's out of stock on their website at the moment and not in stores yet).  Its 100% natural and can be used all over the body. It smelled lovely and the texture was really rich but melts into the skin perfectly.  It will be great for those dry areas that you cant seem to get rid off in winter.

There were about 10 or 12 people who attended the event and I had a chat with most of them.  It was the first event where I was able to chat to a fellow blogger. I met Lorna from who was lovely. Everyone got their fair share of time with Sian & Jackie and it was a nicely planned event, without any pressure to buy any of the products.

When the event came to a close we were given our goodie bags worth over£75, which was the highest value goodie bag they have ever given out. The goodie bag contained 6 products and we also received a copy of this months Marie Claire (which contains a voucher for L’Occitane which you can read about on my blog post here).

Just before the event finished there was a prize draw (at this point there were only about 6 of us left as we were having a great time chatting about beauty boxes and how we were all beauty addicts).  My sister was lucky enough to win the hamper of Balance Me goodies worth £150 (which she is generously sharing with me although she has first pick of the products obviously!!).
Balance Me Shopping Evening Hamper
Balance Me Shopping Evening Hamper
I really enjoyed the event and it was great to find out about a British brand owned by women which uses natural ingredients and essential oils in their products.  They display the % of natural ingredients clearly on the front of each product and the lowest % on the products I came home with was 98% natural. Sian was keen to point out that it would be easier to go through the ingredients that are allowed into their products rather than go through the ingredients that they do not use. Overall I am really impressed with this brand and I can't wait to try all the products. The Balance Me philosophy is beauty that works naturally.  Read more about their story here & the Balance Me Promise here as it's an interesting read.

I couldn’t leave without making a few cheeky purchases.  I bought the Radiance Face Mask and Cleanse & Smooth Face Balm which were both recommended by Sian. I also picked up the Stellar Face Balm (100% natural) which had an amazing 70% off in store as I think the packaging has changed. There was also an offer in store when you purchased 2 items you received a free Facial Expression Filler (99% natural)  worth £22. This was still available even with the 15% discount.
These shopping evenings are a great way to get to know more about a brand and it’s nice to get the opportunity to speak to the people behind the brand and find out what it’s all about. If you are interested in Balance Me products check out their website here.

I bought the tickets & the products in the last photo with my own money.

The Wet Brush Detangling Hairbrush

Here's my review of  The Wet Brush Detangling Hairbrush.  I am constantly on the lookout for products that make it easier to manage my thick curly hair.  I recently posted about hairbands that worked on curly hair and now I have found a hairbrush that works as well.

I usually use a tangle teezer which I reviewed along with some other brushes here. Lately, my hair seems to be particularly knotted after washing and I have started leaving the shampoo out of my usual routine and going straight to conditioner which has helped.  Brushing out my hair had been a nightmare and the amount of hair that I have been pulling out was slightly worrying. Added to that, I have literally had to cut some knots out of my hair as there was no way of detangling them.
The Wet Brush Detangling Hairbrush
The Wet Brush cost £8.99 from Sally in Leeds (see my Sally haul here) and since I started using it my hair is so much easier to manage.  This brush has very flexible bristles that work well at brushing through my knotty hair, it still pulls out some hair but definitely not as much as my normal brush.  This is definitely my new favourite brush. If you have curly hair you should definitely give it a try.

You Beauty Discovery Box October 2014 Review

I just thought I would post about the You Beauty Discovery Box October 2014. The theme this month is Handbag Heros – luxury beauty products with a distinct, powerful and effective quick-fix approach to looking good and feeling great.
You Beauty Discovery Box October 2014 Review
Everyone received the following:
Gold Collagen Forte (50ml worth £3.60) – a new anti-ageing liquid beauty supplement that contains hydrolysed collagen enriched with a unique blend of antioxidants (Q10, acai berry, pomegranate, lycopene, L-Carnosine and resveratrol) to protect against the oxidative stress.

Cowshed Perfecting Night Serum (2ml worth £3.20) – The ultimate all-in-one anti-ageing treatment. The innovative serum-in-oil hybrid is bursting with natural active ingredients and essential oils that work wonders on your skin while you sleep, so that you wake up with a firmer, brighter and smoother complexion.

I chose the following 2 items to be included in my box:
Crystal Clear Intense Anti-Ageing Serum (30ml worth £36)  - This is a powerful anti-ageing complex, containing a high level of proven actives to help repair skin, creating a firmer, more youthful look.

Illamasqua Glamore Lipstick in Tease (This is a full size product which retails at £18.50) – these are colour intense lipsticks with a long lasting satin finish. As far as I am aware everyone who chose this option received a colour from the nude collection. I received Tease which is the lightest nude shade and unfortunately it is way too pale for my skin tone, so I will be passing this on to someone who suits it more than I do. It was great to receive something like this in a beauty box that only costs £6.95, so it’s a shame that in the end the colour isn’t suitable for me.

This is the first month that You Beauty decided to make everyone wait until 7am on the 1st of the month to log on and choose the products that they wanted.  This meant that all the people who usually wait up until midnight the night before to get their orders in all had to wait until 7am the next day to order. As someone who usually orders their products when I get to work at around 7am, this meant that it was unusually busy at 7am when I logged on and it took me nearly half an hour to sort my order out as the website kept crashing. You Beauty really need to resolve the website issue if they are going to continue to do this in the future. I can see their point that the people who stay up till midnight always get the best products which is fair enough, but their website really needs to be able to cope with the demand placed on it.

Other choices available this month included:
  • Paul Mitchell Fast Form
  • Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Lacquer
  • Melvita Youthful Day Cream
  • Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser
  • Spiezia Facial Cleanser
  • Lalique Nilang Fragrance
  • Wild About Beauty Power Eyeshadow
  • MeMeMe Cherrubs Blush Cheek & Lip Tint
It was a great selection this month and I could easily have ordered a 2nd box, in order to try out some of the other products that were available.  If you are interested in joining, you can sign up here.

Hair Bands for Curly Hair - Mixed Chicks & Invisibobble

I am always looking for things that make my curly hair easier to manage and one of the top items on my list are hair bands.  Most of the bands that I have been using (material or rubber) end up pulling out some of my hair everytime I try to take them out at the end of the day and over time they get pretty gross with lots of hair tangled around the band.  Recently I have picked up a couple of spiral type bands to see if they are any easier on my hair.  Here's my review of the bands:
Hair Bands for Curly Hair - Mixed Chicks & Invisibobble
First up is the Mixed Chicks hair bands which I picked up in Selfridges in London for £3.99.  I am struggling to find these online at a well known store, but I did find them here although I should point out that I have never purchased anything on this website, so you may need to investigate them a little more before buying.

The Mixed Chicks packaging states no tangles, no tears and no fears and I would say that is correct.  The bobbles do not pull on my hair and whilst they do pull out a few stands when I take them out, this is acceptable compared to what other bands pulled out.  You get 5 bands for £3.99, so I think that is great value and I will pick up some more next time I visit Selfridges.  Let me know if you find any other places that sell these bands.
Hair Bands for Curly Hair - Mixed Chicks
Next up is Invisibobble (the traceless hair ring) - I ordered them from Feel Unique here. They cost £3.75 for 3.  The packaging states traceless, avoids headaches, no split ends, strong grip and for all hair types.  These bands are smaller than the mixed chicks ones, but just as stretchy.  They drag on my hair a little more than the others, but still much less than normal hair bands and they are easier to get hold of so I would definitely recommend them.
Hair Bands for Curly Hair - Invisibobble
Both types of bands come in a variety of colours.

If you have curly or wavy hair then you may be interested in my review of Salt Sprays that work well on my hair.  I will also be reviewing The Wet Brush soon.

Do you use any products that work well on curly hair?  I am looking for products that condition my hair and take some of the frizz out of my hair.

Review of the SPACE.NK Goodie Bag

I recently took advantage of the SPACE.NK free goodie bag when you spend £150, so I thought that I would do a review of the contents (I will do a separate post on the actual products that I purchased to get the goodie bag). The goodie bag is pretty amazing and includes 28 high end products that I can't wait to try.  I have been wanting the items that I purchased for quite a while so the goodie bag made it easy to part with the cash.

£150 is alot of money, but I am sure that most of us have mental wish lists that cost way more than £150, so it was a good excuse to buy some of the items from my wishlist.  I have to say that I shared the purchases with my sister, so that made it even easier as it was only a £75 spend and we will divide the goodie bag up so that we each have 14 extra products.  The other thing that made it an easy spend is that I put £20 away a month into an account specifically to spend on these types of offers or the Christmas Advent Calendars, so I had the money available and it was great not to put it on my credit card.

Here's a photo of the contents of the goodie bag:
SPACE.NK Goodie Bag

  22. Rodial Dragons Blood Sculpting Gel - 15ml - worth £23.70
  23. Sachajuan Hair Repair - 100ml - worth £9.20
  24. Sarah Chapman Dynamic Defence Anti-Ageing Day Cream SPF 15 - 15ml - worth £16.12

  27. Talika Eye Therapy Patch - 1 pair - £5.33
  28. This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray - 5ml - worth £1.06
Wow, if my calculations are correct the goodie bag is worth £339.14, which is amazing.  All in all it's a great opportunity to try out some amazing brands and I think I will keep a list of products that I want to try and only purchase them when there is a free goodie bag like this available.

If you know of any other great goodie bag offers, please let me know.

I bought the main purchases with my own money in order to get the free goodie bag

Update on My Challenges for 2014

Back in December 2013 (if you can remember that far back) I set myself some challenges for 2014.  I posted an update in July here.  Any challenges that I completed by July I will strike out below and just provide updates on the ones I've completed since.

Here's my original list below and I will add an update to each line.
  1. Watch 50 DVDs from my collection and then give them away. I haven't made much progress with this one as I have so much to watch on Sky+ and I have recently joined Netflix.  I have only watched 11 DVDs so far.
  2. Sort out 100 items to get rid of (either sell, throw away or giveaway). This can be any type of item and is all part of the decluttering process. Completed based on the amount of items I've donated to charity, sold on ebay/blog sale, although I didn't keep a specific record of exactly how many.  I need to have clearer challenges next year.
  3. Read 20 books from my collection (I know I am so behind the times, I recently bought a kindle but most of my books are still paperback and take up alot of room). My hope is to finish all the books and pass them on to friends and family. 10 is an achievable target, but I will extend it if I manage the 10 in a short period of time. I have now read 13 and hope to finish the remaining 7 by the end of the year.
  4. Read 25 magazines that I have bought in the last year (mainly bought for the free gifts).  I paid good money for them so I am going to read them all.  I've read 22 so far, so nearly there on this one.
  5. Finish 100 beauty or toiletry products (I will do empties posts along the way).  Completed
  6. Lose 1 stone in weight (I really need to lose more, but this is an achievable target).  This one is still a work in progress (a very slow process). I joined a gym 4 months ago, but as I haven't changed my diet I haven't made much progress in losing weight. I seem to be stuck at the same weight which I guess is better than gaining weight but not good enough. I really need to get some will power and cut out junk food and treats!!!
  7. Pay off my credit card debt (I won't post the amount on my blog but I will update how much has been paid off as a percentage).  The debt is not horrendous and was mainly due to my holiday to LA last year, but I have been relying on interest free credit cards for years and I want to spend 2014 living within my means and not putting frivolous items on my credit card. My credit card debt is now on one interest free card and I need to work out how much I need to pay off each month in order to clear it off before the end of the interest free period.  So far I've only paid off 4% of the total balance.
  8. 30 day no spend – after the sales have finished (I can't deny myself shopping in the sales, I am not strong enough), I am challenging myself to a 30 day no spend period, where I can't buy any unnecessary items including makeup, clothes and toiletries.  I have already stocked up on the necessities, so I shouldn't have to go shopping at all during the 30 day period.  I may extend the 30 day period if all goes to plan. Completed
  9. Earn £50 from completing online surveys.  Completed
  10. When the 30 day no spend is up I will adopt a 1 in 1 out policy.  If I buy something that I don't need, then I will have to get rid of 1 similar item. At least that way I am not adding to my stash.  I have failed this one as I haven't kept track of things, so this is one I'm not going to complete. FAILED
  11. 50km on my exercise bike.  Completed.
  12. Paint my nails a different colour at least once a week and use up 10 nail polishes. As I'm trying to improve the condition of my nails this year I'm not going to complete this challenge. FAILED
  13. Sell 100 items on Ebay (this is linked to challenge 2, but I am keeping it separate to keep track of how much I manage to sell next year). All the items sold, will be things that I already own.  I will not be buying items specifically to sell for this challenge.  Completed.  I have sold 101 items on ebay so far this year.
  14. 30 days - no chocolate. Completed
  15. 30 days - no fizzy drinks (chocolate and fizzy drinks are my addictions, so I want to see if I can live without them).  Completed
  16. Use up 100 samples of beauty products (I am pretty sure I have at least 100 samples of beauty products stashed around the house).  Completed. Ive used up 102 so far this year.
  17. No Junk Food for 30 Days.  Completed.  This is one I have added to make up for the failures.
  18. No Eating Out for 30 Days.  This just includes eating out at restaurants. This is one I have added to make up for the failures.
I am happy with what I have completed so far this year. It would have been nice to have completed them all by now, but I've still got 3 months left for the ones still outstanding.  I have completed 10 and a couple are nearly there so I'm hopeful that by the end of the year all the others will be complete (apart from the 2 I have mentioned failing above).

Have you set yourselves any challenges this year?  Leave me a comment or a link your posts.  I am already starting to think of challenges for 2015.  Where has this year gone?
