Review of 2013

As I look back over 2013, there have been some highs and lows, but overall its been a pretty good year. Here are a few of the highs:

  • Holiday in LA.  This really was an interesting place and I can't wait to go back as soon as possible as I didn't even scratch the surface during my 5 day stay.

The Viper Room

Rodeo Drive

  • Starting my blog.  I had been umming and ahhing about starting a blog for a long time, but didn't think I had enough to say and couldn't think of a decent name.  Driving down the A1 one day with my sister, we were talking about writing a blog and during the 2 hour journey, thought of a name and the rest is history.  Its been a steep learning curve over the last 6 months, but I want to improve the blog in 2014, so keep reading to see what happens.
  • Ollie - I took on a rescue kitten, who I named Ollie (or Oliver when he is naughty).  He is such a live wire and I am so pleased to have him.  He is so cute.
Ollie doing what he does best - looking cute
  • I went to see 30 Seconds to Mars in concert in London and Birmingham in November.  The concerts were amazing and the Christmas shopping in both cities was fab.

Jared Leto is a GOD
This is just a quick round up of 2013.  Roll on 2014.

Check out the challenges that I have set for myself in 2014 here.  I'm not calling them resolutions as we all know what happens to them and I want to complete all my challenges in 2014.

Sephora Haul - Part 4 The Final One - Freebies

Well here it is my final Sephora haul.  Its taken me ages to write them all but hopefully you have enjoyed reading about them.  This one is about the freebies that I received from Sephora.  Basically you get points for each purchase you make and then depending on how many you have you can swap them for freebies.  The freebies can be different between stores and some are really good and some aren't that great.  I was lucky to get a few things I really wanted to try.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm 15ml.  A balm that instantly moisturises, brightens, and tightens facial contours so skin looks rested and relaxed.

Clinque Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ 15ml.   A luxurious moisturiser that promotes smooth, healthy looking skin.

Jack Black Double Duty Face Moisturizer SPF 20 14ml. A lightweight daily moisturiser that acts as a broad-spectrum sunscreen and an advanced facial treatment in one easy product.

TOCCA Eau de Parfum Graciella 5ml x 2.  Graciella pays homage to the unparallelled beauty and sophistication of Grace Kelly. This beautifully lush and floral scent is as unforgettable as its muse.

Lavanila Pure Vanilla Fragrance 3.8ml.  Pure Vanilla blends the tender sensuality of fresh Madagascar vanilla with the warm touch of soft patchouli and pure tonka bean. This superbly clean scent is a must-have for any vanilla addict.

Formula X for Sephora Nail Lacquer in Pyrotechnic 5ml.  This is a bright red nail polish.

Benefit Real Birthday Turn-Ons Gift Box.  This is Sephoras Birthday gift.  If its your birthday and you have a Beauty Insider card they will give you a free gift.  I thought this years was really good as the box includes they're Real Beyond Mascara 3g & Watts Up! Soft Focus Highlighter for Face 2.5g.

AMORE PACIFIC Moisture Bound Vitalizing Masque 4ml x2.  This is a lightweight, liquid-gel overnight masque which helps replenish moisture, vitality and nutrients.

Well that's the last Sephora post for awhile.  I really enjoyed shopping in Sephora while I was on holiday but its probably a good thing the store isn't in the UK as I would probably spend a fortune.

Sephora Haul - Part 3 Bits and Bobs

Here's part 3 of my Sephora haul.  Whilst most of my purchases were gift sets I couldn't resist buying these individual items as well.

Nails Inc Nail Polish in Baker Street 10ml $9.50.  I've been wanting this polish for ages but never got around to buying it, so I'm pleased I finally got it as its a lovely colour.

Sephora Collection Fishnet Hair ties set of 8 $8.50.  I love these hair ties and have bought them from Birchbox before where they are £10 for 6  (I got them for free by using my Birchbox points).  I hadn't seen this style before so I thought I would buy them.

Sephora Outrageous Prisma Chrome Sparkling Metallic Eyeshadows in Outrageous Metallic Beige and Grey.  These were in the sale for $7 each. They are gorgeous metallic colours and I cant wait to try them out.

Sephora Makeup Brush Shampoo and Daily Makeup Brush Cleaner both 60ml and $7 each.  The daily one is for a light clean and the shampoo is for a deeper clean once a week.  I must admit I'm not the best at cleaning my makeup brushes so I bought these in the hope that I will start doing this more regularly.

OPI Nail Lacquer Thinner 60ml.  I bought this as I have a few nail polishes that have got a bit too thick to use so I thought it would be worth trying a thinner before I chuck them.  I especially want to try it on one of my Chanel polishes as I'm absolutely gutted that it has dried out.

Sephora Perfect Manicure Nail Protector $3.  When I paint my nails I get more polish on my skin then my nails so when I saw this I had to buy it.  I'm hoping it will make painting my nails easier and somewhat quicker if I don't have to spend time trying to get the polish off my skin.   I haven't tried it yet but I will let you know how I get on.

Sephora Nail Polish Remover Dispenser (I'm not sure what it is called but this is what I use it for).  $11 I think.  I like these dispensers where you press a cotton pad to the top and it dispenses the liquid onto the cotton pad.  I generally put nail remover in mine but I might put Face Toner in this one as I have 3 now.  I just need to be careful to make sure they are labelled correctly so I don't put nail polish remover on my face.

Only one more Sephora Haul post left where I'll write about the freebies I got while shopping there.

Have you got anything nice from Sephora recently?

Boxing Day Sales Haul

I am one of those crazy people that head out early on Boxing Day to hit the sales, although I am not crazy enough to queue out for hours before the shops open.  I got there about 7.30am after some stores had already opened. There were some great bargains to be had and I managed to get most of the items that I couldn't get during the online sales.  Here's what I bought:

Perfumes & Victoria's Secret Gift Sets
Everything I bought in the photo below was half price.  The Victoria's Secret gift boxes were £9 and £13.  Marc Jacobs Dot EDP 50ml was £26.50 from Debenhams and La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum 30ml was £17.64 (I used Boots Advantage card points for this) and Eau de Toilette 30ml was £15.09.

I did have to queue for about half an hour outside Lush, but it was worth it to get these babies (I am sharing these with my sister as we bought quite a lot). I also bought one of the Candy Box sets for my other sister. All the Christmas items in Lush were half price.

I blogged about some gorgeous sparkly shoes that I wanted in Zara here. Well they originally cost £59.99, then they were reduced online to £29.99 but they didn't have my size.  I managed to buy them in the sales for £19.99. BARGAIN!!!

I bought this gorgeous ombre jacket from Debenhams.  It was originally £159. Reduced to £79.50 in the sales.  I managed to get another 15% off with the store card so it cost £67.57.

Did you get any bargains in the sales?

Only 4 days to go for my Marc Jacobs Nail Polish Giveaway.  UK Only.

I bought everything in this post with my own money and no links are sponsored.

Deborah Lippmann Nail Polishes at TK Maxx

I recently bought 6 Deborah Lippmann nail polishes at TK Maxx for the grand total of £16.  That's £2.67 per polish.  Amazeballs.  They were in the reduced section, marked down to £8 for a set of 3, so of course I had to buy both sets. Here's a list of the polishes I bought:

From left to right:

Nefertiti - Shimmery golden frost (this goes on nicely with 1 coat)

Like a Virgin - this is a bright white polish.  This is the only one out of the bunch that I am not a fan of as I don't like really pale colours, as I find them hard to apply without loads of streaks showing (at least 3 coats are required)

Some Enchanted Evening - pink salmon shimmer glitter.  This is a top coat.

Good Girl Gone Bad - Shimmery purple (1 coat)

Whatever Lola Wants - sheer, sparkling lilac/lavender (2 coats)

Stop and Stare - Bright Red (2 coats)

Rather than take photos of swatches in the winter light, which don't accurately reflect the true colour, heres a link to Deborah Lippmanns website where you can check out the colours.

I will definitely pick up some more if I can find them for this price.

I paid for these nail polishes with my own money and no links are sponsored

My Challenges for 2014

Its nearly that time again, when we start the new year with good intentions and talk about all the resolutions that we are going to make, which usually get forgotten about sometime around mid January (or if you are like me sometimes even earlier).  Since I now have my blog I thought this year rather than writing down my resolutions I would instead set myself some challenges to complete in 2014.  There's no time limit as such, just the hope that they are all finished by the end of 2014.

I will do updates on my blog, so that I can keep track and also I hope that it will motivate me to complete them all.  One of the themes of my challenges is decluttering.  I have bought so much stuff this year, mainly because of all the great offers that have been available, so come 2014 I want to stop spending on things that I don't need and start using up the things that I already have.  If you have been following my blog for any length of time, you will see by the amount of hauls that I have done, that I am a bit of a shopaholic, so I am going to tighten the purse strings next year and see what I can achieve.  Here's my list so far (in no particular order):

  1. Watch 50 DVDs from my collection and then give them away.
  2. Sort out 100 items to get rid of (either sell, throw away or giveaway). This can be any type of item and is all part of the decluttering process.
  3. Read 10 books from my collection (I know I am so behind the times, I don't own a kindle). My hope is to finish all the books and pass them on to friends and family. 10 is an achievable target, but I will extend it if I manage the 10 in a short period of time.
  4. Read all the old magazines that I have bought in the last year (mainly bought for the free gifts).  I paid good money for them so I am going to read them all.  I will do a count of all the magazines in the house and update this post when I know how many I need to get through
  5. Finish 100 beauty or toiletry products (I will do empties posts along the way)
  6. Lose 1 stone in weight (I really need to lose more, but this is an achievable target
  7. Pay off my credit card debt (I won't post the amount on my blog but I will update how much has been paid off as a percentage).  The debt is not horrendous and was mainly due to my holiday to LA this year, but I have been relying on interest free credit cards for years and I want to spend 2014 living within my means and not putting frivolous items on my credit card.
  8. 30 day no spend – after the sales have finished (I can't deny myself shopping in the sales, I am not strong enough), I am challenging myself to a 30 day no spend period, where I can't buy any unnecessary items including makeup, clothes and toiletries.  I have already stocked up on the necessities, so I shouldn't have to go shopping at all during the 30 day period.  I may extend the 30 day period if all goes to plan.
  9. Earn £50 from completing online surveys
  10. When the 30 day no spend is up I will adopt a 1 in 1 out policy.  If I buy something that I don't need, then I will have to get rid of 1 similar item. At least that way I am not adding to my stash.
  11. 50km on my exercise bike
  12. Paint my nails a different colour at least once a week and use up 10 nail polishes.
  13. Sell 100 items on Ebay (this is linked to challenge 2, but I am keeping it separate to keep track of how much I manage to sell next year).  All the items sold, will be things that I already own.  I will not be buying items specifically to sell for this challenge
  14. 30 days - no chocolate
  15. 30 days - no fizzy drinks (chocolate and fizzy drinks are my addictions, so I want to see if I can live without them)
  16. Use up 100 samples of beauty products (I am pretty sure I have at least 100 samples of beauty products stashed around the house)
I think that the above list is all achievable and having to update the blog should keep me motivated.  It will be interesting to see how I get on at the end of 2014.

Are you setting yourself any challenges for 2014?

Remember to check out my Marc Jacobs giveway here.  Its closing at the end of December.

Birchbox Review - December 2013

I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from the December Birchbox, after seeing some posts on Facebook from people who were disappointed. Since my expectations were so low, I have to say that I was pretty happy with the products I received.  Granted, its not the best beauty box Birchbox have ever done, but its nowhere near the worst beauty box I have received. They have managed to pack the box with brands that I have never tried and products that I will definitely find a use for.  Here's what I received:

  • Number 4 Non Aerosol Hair Spray 43ml - This botanical-rich formula provides flexible hold (full size costs £18.50)
  • Nail Rock Nail Velvet nail polish - This is a full size polish and costs £6.99.  I am interested to try this as I have never tried a velvet polish before.  The colour is navy.
  • Sin-Care Booster Serums Party Girl Serum 5ml - activates the skins detoxification process, reduces dark circles, plus it de-stresses and brightens your complexion (£46.50 for full size).  Definitely worth trying as I need all of the above.
  • Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow in Paris - all natural shimmery mineral powder (£12.50 for full size).  I don't normally use loose powder eyeshadows as I am afraid that I will make a mess, but this is a sparkling sandy nude colour which will be perfect for Christmas parties, so I will give it a try.
  • Lamilou Absolutely Natural Smooth Exfoliating Liquid Orange Blossom Flower - 30ml (from £22 for full size) - 100% natural.  This product cleanses and purifies the skin without drying it and can be used as a daily body exfoliant
  • Twistband Hair Tie (£10 for pack of 6) - Always useful to have and a welcome additional item in the box.

Overall there is not one product included in the box that I won't use, so I would class that as a success.  Admittedly I am not familiar with any of the brands included in the box, but isn't that the point of beauty boxes, to be exposed to new brands and try things that you would not normally buy. For £10 including postage and packing I for one am quite happy with this box.

Prices quoted are for the full size products, not the actual samples in the box

Sephora Haul - Part 2

I can't believe its taken me so long, but here is part 2 of my Sephora Haul from my LA trip back in October.  Sorry its taken so long, but I think it's because there have been so many good beauty offers over here that all my hauls in LA have had to take a back seat.  Anyway, here are a few of the other items that I bought in Sephora.  I must admit this shop is 'like my own personal brand of heroin' I'm so addicted to it.

Sephora Favorites Glitz & Glam Party Sampler - $45 worth $159.  This day to night makeup collection contains 8 of Sephoras most dazzling products plus a chic clutch (including 4 full-size products).  This set includes:

  • Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee - 5.1g
  • Lancome Hypnose Star in Noir Midnight Mascara - 4ml
  • Nails Inc Kensington Caviar Gel Effect Plumping Top Coat - 5ml
  • Nars Lip Gloss in Gold Digger - 3.5ml
  • Sephora Collection False Eye Lashes in Celebrity - 1 pair
  • Stila Stay All Day 10 in 1 HD Illuminating Beauty Balm with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 - 10ml
  • Too Faced 3 Way Lash Lining Tool - 0.8ml
  • Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Space Cowboy - 1.5g

I'm really looking forward to trying the Too Faced 3 way lash lining tool as I saw a similar eyeliner pen that I wanted to try but I hadn't got around to buying it and this one is way cheaper.

Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Lip Lip Sampler - $25 worth $90. Lip Sampler - Gloss? Glaze? Tint? Treatment? From neutrals to pinks, this essential kit has all you need for luscious lips (including one full-size product). This set includes:

  • Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Rhubard - 1.48g
  • Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Dolly - 2ml
  • Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment - 2.2g
  • Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Bare Pink - 2.8g
  • Nars Lip Gloss in Turkish Delight - 4g
  • Tarte LipSurgence Lip Luster in Glitzy - 3g

Anastasia Beverly Hills - No Brows, No Problem Kit - Medium Ash - $59. Enjoy bolder, fuller-looking brows while encouraging hair growth.  This set includes:

  • Brow Enhancing Serum Advanced - 2.5g
  • Brow Wiz - 0.085g
  • Clear Brow Gel - 7.93g

I've heard good things about Anastasia products and as I have really thin brows (even though I have never over plucked them) I cant wait to try these out.

Hourglass Veil Mineral & No 28 Serum Primer Set - $25 - Veil Mineral Primer helps eliminate redness, reduce pore size, soften the appearance of fine lines and provides Broad Spectrum SPF 15 protection.  No 28 Primer serum is an intensely hydrating, nutrient-rich serum and primer with 28 beneficial ingredients - 14 essential oils, 10 plant oils and 4 vitamins - to nurture the skin as it prepares it for makeup.  This set includes:

  • Veil Mineral Primer - 10ml
  • No 28 Primer Serum - 5ml

I can't wait to try out these products.  Sephora has got to be my favourite store in the US.  I can't wait to visit it again.  If you want to read my Sephora Haul Part 1 check it out here.

Shoe Bargains from Topshop & Primark

I picked up a couple of bargains recently at Topshop and Primark.

The berry coloured flats were only £4 at Primark.

These pretty silver sandals were reduced from £28 to £7 at Topshop.  They are still available here, but only in sizes 39, 40 & 42 (please note this is subject to change).

Cheap Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat at TK Maxx

Last Saturday, I managed to get hold of 3 full size bottles of Seche Vite dry fast top coat at TK Maxx for £4.99 each. This is approximately half the normal price.  There were 5 bottles in total in the Leeds branch, so check out your local branch to see if there are any available.

Candie's Nail Polish

I was browsing in Primark (as you do) and came across a stand with some lovely nail polishes called Candie's. They caught my eye as they are in a really pretty bottle with a rose gold top.   I haven't seen this brand before, so I thought I would pick a couple up while I was in Meadowhall Shopping Centre. There were a good range of colours but I ended up buying two:

White Noise - a clear polish with iridescent bar glitter and smaller glitter.  It will look great as a top coat.

Dream Pink - a pink glitter with clear base which again will look great as a top coat.

They are 10ml and were priced on the stand at £2.50 which I didn't think was bad, but when I got to the till they wouldn't scan and when I checked my bill the manager had put them through manually at £1 so they were a definite bargain.

I would be tempted to buy more if I hadn't just tidied up my nail polishes and realised just how many I have.  I didn't count my nail polish stash, but I probably have well over a 100.

I will add a photo when I get a chance to try them on my nails.

Have you bought any Candies nail polishes?

YOU BEAUTY Discovery Box Review - December 2013

I have just received my 2nd YOU BEAUTY Discovery Box and I have to say that this is becoming my favourite beauty box (sorry Birchbox).  Its cheap (£6.95 including postage), you get to choose the 2 main products that you are going to receive (there were 10 options) and the value of the products far out way the cost of the box.  Whats not to love.

Here's the box that I received:

I have to say I could have ordered 2 or 3 boxes, because it was a struggle to choose which products to put in my box as there were so many great options. In the end I chose:

  • Magnifibres Brush on False Lashes.  When mascara alone isn't enough, Magnifibres Brush-on False Lashes give an instant false lash effect without the fuss.  I can't wait to try this as I have really short lashes. This is a full size product that is worth £20.  You can buy them from www.lookfantastic.com
  • I also picked Ancienne Ambiance Lavendula Bath & Body Oil.  Made with finest quality lavender grown without the use of pesticides, it can help ease muscle pain, sooth headaches, tension/stress and can also help to improve sleep quality and concentration.  This sounds perfect for me. This is a 30ml bottle that retails for £12 here. I should point out that the 200ml retails for £30 which is better value.
I also received a 2ml Flash Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum sample and a sample of Green & Blacks Organic milk chocolate with raisins & hazelnuts which was yummy and lasted about 5 seconds after this photo was taken.

I am so happy with this box and totally tempted to go back and buy another one. Here's a list of the other products that are available to choose from:

Lanolips 101 Ointment
he-shi Express Liquid Tan & Mitt
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector
Awapuhi Wild Ginger HydroCream Whip & Hydromist Blow-out
Lola Matte Long Lasting Lipstick
Elegant Touch False Nails in Polished Red
Total Wipe Out Cleansing Wipes
Dr Nick Lowe Age Correct Eye Serum

If you are interested in signing up, the link to the website is here.

What did you pick to receive in your box this month?

I paid for this box with my own money and I am not receiving any payment for including the links in my post.

Kiehls Bargain Haul

There have been lots of great offers around lately and this Kiehls offer was one of the best (sadly its no longer available).  For £8.50 I got all of this.

The offer was buy 1 item and receive 5 deluxe samples for free, plus postage was free on all orders and you could also pick 3 normal samples as well.   As Kiehls is one of my favourite brands this offer was a no brainer for me so I snapped it up.  This is what I received:

I purchased the Ultra Facial Toner (75ml) for £8.50.  I love the Ultra Facial Moisturizer, so I have been meaning to get the toner as well.

These are the 5 deluxe samples:

  1. Ultra Facial Moisturizer (30ml) - worth approx £5.76 (based on full size prices)
  2. Creme de Corps (30ml) - worth approx £3.40
  3. Midnight Recovery Concentrate (4ml) - worth approx £4.80
  4. Bath and Shower Liquid Body Cleanser Grapefruit (65ml) - worth approx £3.90
  5. Ultimate Strength Hand Salve (30ml) - worth approx £3.80
These are the 3 normal samples that I picked:
    1. Midnight Recovery Concentrate (2 ml)
    2. Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution (1.5ml)
    3. Facial Fuel Energizing Moisture Treatment (3ml)
All in all I think this was a brilliant offer, the freebies were some of my favourite Kiehls products and the others I am happy to try out for the first time.

I find these offers by signing up to brands facebook pages or by receiving regular emails from them.   I also keep my eyes out on various facebook beauty pages.

Did anyone else manage to take advantage of this offer?

I paid for these products with my own money and no links are sponsered.

    Donate to Charity at Christmas

This year my family and I decided to donate £10 from the money we would normally spend on each other to charity.  There are 4 of us, so we have £30 each to donate to our chosen charities.

I have just found a great way to support one of my favourite charities, the Cats Protection branch where I got 2 rescue cats.  The great thing is that it involves shopping, which is always good for a self confessed shopaholic like me.

My chosen charity has set up a wish list on Amazon.  You can buy any of the items on the list (cat food, cat litter, cat toys and scratch mats etc).  These range in price from £4.49 to £50+.  The only difference is that after you pay, the items are sent directly to the charity.  I think that it is a great way to support charities this Christmas and I know that my money is going directly to help the cats in the care of the Cats Protection.  In addition I know that the charity is getting things that they really need.

I think we will start doing this every year, as we all spend far too much at Christmas on stuff that we don't really need, so its nice to spend a little bit of that money on good causes.

Here's a link to the wish list that I bought some items from.  This is my local branch, but there are wish lists for branches throughout the country.

My sister and mum donated their money to dog rescue centres and my other sister donated her money to a couple of horse charities.  You can tell we all love animals can't you.

    Boots Haul and Offers

Boots had an event night last week in Meadowhall where if you spent £50 you received £12 worth of advantage points. This was an offer I couldn't resist especially as there were a couple of good makeup freebies to be had if you spent £15 or more.

My first purchase was Max Factor Lashfinity 3 day Mascara.  I have been wanting to try this for awhile as I want to see if it really works, as mascara is the one makeup item I use on a daily basis and if this lasts for 3 days than its a good time saver (I'm trying to justify my purchases here).  This cost £18.99 which is steep so I will definitely review it here once I have a chance to try it out.  It better work for that price.  Anyway the reason that I justified this purchase is that it came with a free gift if you spent £15 or more which is worth £28.  The free gift included:

False Lash Effect Mascara Black Brown Waterproof 13.1ml
Glossfinity Nail Polish in Cobalt blue 11ml
Lipfinity Lip Colour in Essential Natural
£3 voucher on Max Factor Whipped Cream Foundation

My second purchase was L'Oreal Nails a Porter which are stick on nails in beige with a black edge £7.99 and Collection Privee by Eva lipstick in Nude £8.19.

If you spent £15 or more you received a free gift worth £30 which included:

Volume Million Lashes Hologram top Coat 8.5ml
Colour Riche Lipstick 461 Scarlett Creme 24g
Colour Riche Nail Polish 401 Rouge Pin up 5ml
2 Revitalift Laser Renew Sachets 1.5ml
    Youth Code Night Sachet 1.5ml
£2.50 coupon off Paris True Match Liquid Foundation

I also bought a Stila Smudge Pot in Kitten for £13.  I have wanted to try this for ages.

2 Maybelline Color Show Brocades nail polishes in Knitted Gold & Rosy Rosettes £3.99 each (not the greatest names I must admit).  There was a 3 for 2 offer on so I also got a Baby Lips Moisturising Lip Balm in Pink Punch worth £2.99 for free and if you bought 3 Maybelline products you also got a Baby Lips Cherry Velvet limited edition sample.

Finally I got a Bourjois Color Edition 24H Eyeshadow in Kaki Cheri for £6.99 (sorry for some reason I didn't take a photo).

Now as some of you may have noticed the items above work out at over £60 and I must confess that I did do 2 £50 purchases but the rest of the items were either my sisters or necessities which I'm not including as they aren't that interesting.

I really enjoyed this shop as I got some items that I had wanted to buy for ages and some that I just bought on an impulse and can't wait to try out.  I always love it when I can combine a good shop with great offers.

Have you bought any goodies from Boots lately?
